Movie reviews and ratings by Film Critic Roger Ebert

Ryan Gosling stars as a stuntman who is forced to find a missing movie star, investigate a conspiracy, and repair his relationship with the love of his life. The film was written by Drew Pearce and inspired by the 1980s TV series of the same name. The core of Nosferatu centers on the relationship between the Count and Ellen. From Ellen’s side, we immediately come to discover that the kind, anxious young woman has a mysterious past and a thing for the baddest of bad boys.

Another case of a critically acclaimed movie underperforming at the box office in 2024, Saturday Night tells the story of the first episode ever of Saturday Night Live. Movie Review Light and shadow are given incredible personality, echoing the 1922 original’s emphasis on Nosferatu’s own shadow and its ability to “engulf you like a daemonic nightmare” (to quote Murnau’s classic). In the original, said shadow powerfully but somewhat ambiguously signals his presence.

The movies of Christopher Nolan are all, in their way, Odyssean epics, Homeric… Willem Dafoe is one of the world’s biggest actors — but over five decades… Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Emma Corrin also star in the latest take on Bram Stoker’s eternal tale of the vampire who descends from the mountains to spread plague and death.

Megalopolis isn’t just a transcendental delight for the senses, it’s a manifestation of Coppola’s dreams for humanity and his dedication to cinema. Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live biopic movie gets a glowing review from original show star Dan Aykroyd, who also praises its accuracy. The Apprentice depicts a young Donald Trump in 1970s New York, highlighting his formative relationship with Roy Cohn, a ruthless attorney. As Trump seeks to establish his own legacy, Cohn identifies him as an ideal protégé, drawn to his ambition and determination to succeed at any cost. Ghosts season 4’s two-part Christmas special mostly focused on Pete and Jay, but the outing also proved the show is wasting one great human character.

Movie Review

Frank Capra’s classic is a perfect movie, and almost 80 years on, Jimmy Stewart’s masterpiece has lost absolutely none of its magic. Mothers’ Instinct delivers a tense, compelling, and thrilling story that leads to constant guessing and reassessing about what could be true. Nearly three decades after their Oscar-winning work on Forrest Gump (1994), the duo of Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks reunited for Here, but it performed worse at the box office in comparison to Forrest Gump. It’s a unique concept that looks fondly back at the past few decades of American culture, telling a story spanning generations that ultimately studies how society has evolved with time. The disparity between artistic merit and box-office performance is perhaps best demonstrated by the case of the Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice. With performances from Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong as Donald Trump and Roy Cohn, respectively, which earned them Golden Globes nominations, the Ali Abbasi movie bombed for reasons extraneous to the actual content of the film.

As her husband, Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz), is increasingly subject to Nosferatu’s growing whims, Lucy is much more of an activist — she approaches the townspeople to oppose the entity to no avail. Eggers’ Ellen, by contrast, is an isolated victim of an abusive supernatural relationship, solely taking on responsibility for the destruction of the beast. It’s a streamlined, modern variant of the classic protagonist, given more agency and supernatural prowess than earlier variants have allowed. In the end, Ledbetter never received her settlement from Goodyear, but redefined, belatedly in the 21st century, what equal pay for equal work should truly mean.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Blue Ivy Carter and Kelvin Harrison Jr. lend their voices to the “live-action” animated origin story about the young cat (Aaron Pierre) who becomes Simba’s royal father. December 26, 2024 • Every year, we remember some of the writers, actors, musicians, filmmakers and performers who died over the past year, and whose lifetime of creative work helped shape our world. November 26, 2024 • You may not see Denzel Washington in the new Netflix film adaptation of the August Wilson play The Piano Lesson, but his influence as producer – and parent – is unmistakable. Denzel’s son Malcolm Washington is the director, and his son John David Washington plays one of the leads alongside Danielle Deadwyler and Samuel L. Jackson. January 3, 2025 • Adapted from the Pulitzer prize-winner novel from Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys tells the story of two Black boys who form an unshakeable bond at a segregated reform school in the Jim Crow South. It’s quite ambitious and unlike other prestigious book to film adaptations you’ve probably seen — most of it unfolds in the first-person perspective.

I’m not here to tell you to pick this service over any other — but I can offer a little advice on how to maximize the next few days. January 4, 2025 • The co-writer of I Heart Huckabees and director of The Little Hours was found dead at a Los Angeles residence on Friday. For all its ambition and cinematic pyrotechnics, Wicked doesn’t feel like it’s been opened up that much from the source, maybe because the play is already huge and eye-popping. So much of the show consists of speeches, tours, grand expositions — people speaking and singing to and with large crowds. That makes some organic sense in a stage production, but it can be wearying when translated to film. Reinforcing the sense of overarching allegory, the population of Oz is basically a blank mass of imbeciles, easily manipulated and fickle to a fault. Meanwhile, we keep waiting for the main characters to show some delicacy of emotion, something subtle and human, something to make us care for them beyond their status as icons or symbols. It opens with all of Oz celebrating the liquidation of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who will eventually be played by Cynthia Erivo.
